WHAT TO DO IF YOU LOSE IT.
This is your Time of Testing. Yes, you've done a terrible thing. You've gone way beyond where you're supposed to go. You probably believe you don't have anything left to lose because you believe that you've already lost it all.That is not true. You can still turn your life around. Under our system of law, even the worst wrong-doer is entitled to a lesser sentence if they voluntarily surrender when they could still go on. You could still keep your life. You could still have a future. Here's all you have to do.
IF YOUR VICTIM IS NOT INJURED AND IS STILL WITH YOU:Be kind to your victim. Use the phone book and call Information and get the telephone number for the nearest office of the Public Defender.Call that office and ask to speak to an attorney about an emergency matter. If no one is available at that moment, stay calm and just leave your phone number. There’s no reason to believe that will send the police to you. You are just a person who has phoned for help who has left a phone number.
Stay calm, wait for a return call for an hour and if you get none, call back and stress that it really is an emergency and you NEED to have a lawyer help you NOW.If it is a weekend or holiday, use the phone book to call a criminal attorney in private practice and leave your number with their answering service, saying that this is an EMERGENCY and that you need them to phone you back as soon as possible.
Call several private attorneys and leave the same message with all of their answering services so that the chances of your getting a return phone call are higher.When you are speaking with an attorney, tell that person you need them to help you because you have hurt a woman or taken a child and want to end this situation the right way. They will tell you what to do and can be with you to handle your safe surrender to the police.Do as your attorney instructs. You can relax now: you have just guaranteed that you will have a future. |
IF YOUR VICTIM IS INJURED AND IS STILL WITH YOU: Take care of your victim. Have your lawyer send for medical help if you can reach a lawyer right away. If not, phone 911 and simply report that a person is injured there and needs emergency help, without saying anything else until you have an attorney. Once you've made that first call, your life is back under control and you still have a chance to live it because you have just put your victim's well-being ahead of your own, which is what everybody wants.
IF YOUR VICTIM IS INJURED AND IS NOT STILL WITH YOU: There's no need to panic. What you want to do now is make things better as fast as you can. Follow the steps I’ve written above to get yourself an attorney and then tell the attorney you reach exactly what’s happened so that your attorney can have your former victim found in time to help them, which gives you an excellent chance to have a future as you are doing what everyone wants you to do.
IF YOUR VICTIM IS NOT INJURED AND IS NOT STILL WITH YOU:Okay. Either they got away or you let them go. Believe me, either one is an improvement for you as no one can say you are still threatening them and that calms people down. You still have a chance to have a future if you follow the steps I’ve written above to get a lawyer to represent you. Just do what they say to cooperate with authorities and you can give yourself an excellent chance to have a future. No matter what you have done, right now you are doing what everyone wants you to do and that counts in your favor. The worst is already over. |
IF YOUR VICTIM IS DEAD: That's a crying shame. It must be very hard for you right now. But don't panic. What’s done is done and you can still save yourself if you don't harm anybody else now.People have been in worse spots than you and survived to tell about it. You can, too, if you follow the steps I've written in the first situation, above. Don't think that things are hopeless now. Life is still beyond predicting and you can't possibly know how it's going to turn out. You can still influence it for the good if you want to do so. Make that phone call to come in out of the cold.
AFTER YOU HAVE MADE THAT CALL, don’t get trapped into worrying about what’s going to happen and get yourself all alarmed again. The worst is over. Just notice where you are right now and relax there. It’s not a bad place. It really is better than where you have just been. Help really is on the way. Your life is back under your own control again and you can now keep it that way. I got through prison and I’m certainly not a ‘tough’ guy. You can handle it too if you have to do so and perhaps, some day in the future, you will be able to reach out and help others like you, too.
